The European Society for Vascular Surgery was founded and inaugurated on May 6, 1987 in London. This inaugural meeting was attended by Presidents or Representatives of almost all the National Vascular Societies in Europe, who supported the formation and aims of the ESVS.

The Officers and Members of the Council were proposed and elected, ensuring a satisfactory representation from various European countries. It was further agreed that the Society would generally meet in September each year. The Society has grown enormously since and has now over 3000 members, mostly European, but many from other parts of the world.

The Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded in 1966 by Professor Sol Cohen, London. The Society changed its name to The Vascular Society in 2004 to reflect the increasing multi-disciplinary nature of its Members. At the same time, the Society took over the activities of the British Vascular Foundation (now known as the Circulation Foundation) as the fundraising arm of the Society.The Society was granted separate specialty status in March 2012.From 2019 the Society’s administration has been provided by Executive Business Support Ltd.

In 1989, based on the actions of KESY committees, consisting of Greek physicians (P. Balla, P. Dimakakos, D-S Georgopoulos, etc.) the proposal for the creation of an independent specialty was voted first and then with the Presidential Decree 208 in April 1989, Vascular Surgery was established as an independent medical specialty in Greece, followed by Decrees for the "recognition of Hospital Units as suitable for the practice of Doctors in the specialty of Vascular Surgery. Thus, the training is carried out in vascular surgery clinics and vascular surgery departments in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa, Alexandroupoli. The granting of the title of the specialty is done after examinations by a three-member committee. It was established to have a seven-year training period, the first three years in General Surgery practice and a 6-month period each in Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Surgery, while the remaining three years in recognized Vascular Surgery centers. In November 1981, Professor P. Balas founded the "Hellenic Vascular Surgery Society"

The Société Luxembourgeoise de Chirurgie Vasculaire / Luxembourgish Society of Vascular Surgery is an association of surgeons in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg who treat arterial and venous vascular diseases in all areas of the body, excluding the vessels in the head and directly nearby the heart. The treatment options include all possibilities from drug therapy to interventional catheter procedures or classic open vascular operations. The association serves the common exchange of experiences and continuous training and represents the interests of the Luxembourg vascular surgeons vis-à-vis the Ministry of Health and the health insurance company CNS. The Société Luxembourgeoise de Chirurgie Vasculaire is also an active member of European societies such as the ESVS and the UEMS.

The German Society for Vascular Surgery was established in 1984 during a conference in Munich. It successfully advocated for vascular surgery to be recognized as a distinct field in medical training. Over the years, it strengthened bonds with Austrian and Swiss colleagues, leading to joint conferences and the creation of the "three-country conference." The society also founded the "Vascular Surgery" magazine in collaboration with Austrian and Swiss counterparts. It initiated a certification program for vascular centers, organized the first National Vascular Day in 2005, and established the Private Academy DGG gGmbH for further training. In 2010, it expanded its name to include vascular medicine. The society continues to grow in membership and welcomes contributions from all interested parties.
